HUMBLE BEGINNING

The year was 1904, and the date was the 16th of April when A. P. Moller and his father Peter Maersk Moller established Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg (The Steamship Company Svendborg) in the town of Svendborg. The beginning was quite rough, as they faced difficulty in raising capital, but they managed to raise enough capital to purchase a second-hand steamer on 6th October 1904. The ship was then named after their hometown and the owning company “SVENDBORG”. By 1912 AP Moller established a second shipping company and by 1918 AP Moller acquired enough means to establish the Odense Steel Shipyard on the island of Funen. By 1991 Maersk was known around the globe and the established Maersk Container Industry was established to develop and manufacture containers for the shipping industry.
